DemoNation #10 Mom’s Knife

Demo Nation! How’s it going? Good? Good.

We’re listening to all the delicious offerings of the one and only MOM’S KNIFE! From the Midwest, Mom’s Knife is an alternative punk/hip-hop musician and producer. His debut album LIBRA dropped this October (Check it out!). However, Mom’s Knife has been making splashes long before this. With singles and collaborations dropping steadily since May this year, nothing is slowing him down. Along with his new debut album, he spoiled us with a three song collaboration with Spectre Falling for the spooky season, appropriately titled: The Seance (Check this out too!).

Mom’s Knife’s background in Hip Hop started with break dancing. That’s right! Our knifey mom has got some killer moves! Though, don’t ask him to break it out unless Beggin’ by Madcon is playing. With the initial plan of being a professional Break Dancer, Mom’s Knife was around Hip Hop, “in its purest form” with DJs who spun on vinyl for these events. It only became natural for Mom’s Knife to dive head first into the world of hip-hop and to start free-styling on long drives to competitions.

As the years went on, Mom’s Knife kept rapping and even started to create his own beats, “no one was making anything I liked so I did it myself,” he explained (catch the full interview for more talk on beat creation software). This gave him a path into music production – Check out the album Femme Fatale VOL 1 for his catchy beats. Previous songs that Mom’s Knife – known as Sly Coop then – has made have been scrubbed from the internet (what a sneaky bandit).

Life threw Mom’s Knife a curve ball when he found out he was going to be a father around the age of nineteen. His break dancing already came to a near standstill at this point and not sure what he wanted to do in college, Mom’s Knife decided he needed to go out and make money for his new family. A respectable decision, he felt he “could still make music at home” with a child. Of course, he is right! Most of the music community on Threads are talented at-home musicians.

After nearly a decade as a hip-hop Rapper, formerly Sly Coop, was getting bored and wanted to do something different. “I wanted to rap over traditional rock beats,” he said about re-branding to Mom’s Knife in May of this year. It’s quite binding. You can hear this marriage of rock beats and hip hop on songs like Chicago Typewriter, Sink Those Teeth In, BLUEFLAME, and many more.

Keep up with Mom’s Knife on his socials @momsknife to hear his next drop.
